NORTHERN CALIFORNIA DOGS

Fostered between San Francisco and Redding

Name: HANK

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age: 3 years old.
Size: Medium

HANK is a 3-year-old goofball of a boy.  He has a heart of gold.  He is happy-go-lucky & friendly with everyone he meets, & he's been interacting nicely with the male dogs in his foster home; he doesn't get to hang out with the female because, well, she's not always nice.  Hank is a good-sized boy (56#) with a medium-length, easy-to-care-for coat.  While he is sweet & silly & playful, Hank seems to have had little training in his previous home.  He knows the "sit" command, but no others.  He is is goofy on a leash, so he hasn't been leash trained.  He is curious about toys & balls, but he doesn't know to bring them back.  He is crate-trained & hasn't had an accident in his foster home.  Hank will be a wonderful companion dog for someone.  He would love to have a human pal & to learn to be the best boy he can be.  He's athletic, so he'll enjoy an active home.

If you'd like to meet Hank, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about Hank, or to inquire about adopting him, email Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org.

Name: BEEDLE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age: 4 months old.
Size: Medium

BEEDLE is a 4-month-old softie of a pup.  He is a gentle, submissive pup, who has had little to nothing by way of learning to get along in this world.  He is very responsive & connects well with his foster mom, but with every new situation, he finds himself on his belly.  He is sleeping in a crate at night, & he's still working on housebreaking.  He is doing very well with his recall, coming every time to his foster mom.  The leash still worries him, unless it's loose.  When he hits the end of it, he lays down.  He is learning to play, picking up sticks in the backyard & taking them to one of the other dogs in his foster family--not yet to his foster mom.  He really enjoys the company of the other dogs in his foster home & would probably like to live with another dog.  He would do very well with someone who has training experience, particularly BC training experience, as this little guy comes from a working home & both of his parents are working dogs.  So, even thought he's a soft pup, he will benefit from learning, leadership, & things to do.  This is a puppy with tremendous potential, who simply needs someone with some experience, time to give him, & outlets for his BC need to be stimulated.  He's a wonderful dog.

UPDATE (after first week in rescue): Beedle is growing by leaps &
bounds in his training & socialization.  He's attending a puppy
toddler class, where he learned about how to sit & stand & walk on a
leash a little bit.  He also learned about going over an 8" agility
jump, which he mastered quickly.  He is greeting people & other dogs.
He seems quite interested in agility, in having something to do, &
watches the dogs at his foster mom's agility class with typical BC
intensity.  He is also going to puppy daycare, spending the day at a
small sewing shop.  He has learned that tile floors are okay to walk
on, & that if he approaches people, they pet him & give him treats.
He rides to "work" with the owner of the shop in a little cab attached
to her bike, & he really likes surveying the world from his little
perch (in a crate, of course).  His housebreaking is coming along
nicely.  All in all, this pup is blossoming!

If you'd like to meet Beedle, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about Beedle, or to inquire about adopting him, email Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org.

Name: TAHOE BEAR

(Click on picture for more photos)

"Tango is being sponsored in memory of our Jesi James.  The Lockwoods, Caldwell, ID"

Male

Black & White
Age: 1 year old.
Size: Medium

Tahoe Bear is a 1 year old neutered male. He is the sweetest, smartest most confident Border Collie Aussie Mix who seems to just love life and everyone and everything he meets whether it be human of any size, or other canines. We call him Tahoe because of his gorgeous blues eyes. He is a healthy medium size boy weighing about 45 lbs. He has a velvety soft thick coat that you can't help but want to just love all over him. Tahoe is VERY affectionate and eager to please. Tahoe loves to play ball, keep away and pull with his Border Collie hostesses. He plays nicely with the other dogs and is even bringing back the ball and frisbee now. Tahoe is very content finding a toy and entertaining himself or just curling up by your side. He is what I would call a velcro dog, he always wants to be with you. Tahoe loves taking his daily walks and is getting much better on the leash even learning to sit and stay. He will benefit greatly from some consistent obedience training and will learn very fast as most Border Collies do. Tahoe does not have the typical Border Collie intensity and settles down very nicely into his crate. Tahoe is housetrained, never had an accident inside and uses the doggie door like a pro. He loves to ride in the car or take a ride in the boat. He shows no signs of being destructive. Tahoe is heartworm negative, current on Heartgard and all his vaccinations.

If you would like to meet Tahoe Bear, you must have a approved application on file. For more information please email Catherine and Michael at mchoffman@ncbb.net or call 530-886-0730. Tahoe is being fostered in Auburn, CA which is about 30 miles North East of Sacramento off Interstate I-80.

Name: APRIL

(Click on picture for more photos)

April is now being sponsored as a tribute to "Scout", from Jody and Kent Morales

Female

Black & White
Age: 1-2 years old.
Size: Medium

APRIL is a 1-to-2-year-old Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog girl.
April is all puppy--utterly silly, bounding everywhere on her way to
wherever she is going.  April is sweet & loving with everyone she
meets.  She's a happy-go-lucky girl.  April is crate-trained, but we
don't know about housebroken.  We are fairly certain that she lived
outside before she came into rescue.  When she first came inside, she
acted as if she had never crossed a threshold before.  She goes in &
out happily now!  She does everything happily now!  April has had
little-to-no training, but we think she'll be a blast to train
because she has such a good-natured enthusiasm.  She is a great size,
about 40#, & she's very athletic.  April is keen about the chickens
in her foster home, so she'd probably do better in a home without
chickens or other small animals like cats--she hasn't been cat-tested
formally.

If you'd like to meet April, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about this darling, silly girl, contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org.

Name: MARBLE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Marble is now being sponsored in honor of Laddie and Jezebel.

Male

Black & White
Age: 3 years old.
Size: Medium

MARBLE is a 3-year-old boy who came into rescue with a seriously damaged foot. The injury happened a long time ago, & the foot healed badly. His right front leg shortened, which made movement painful for him. He's recently had his front leg amputated, & he's getting around beautifully. He runs & plays, & is a typical rambunctious Border Collie. Marble is a wonderful companion dog. He loves people, & is good with other dogs. Marble is not good with cats or chickens. Marble is housebroken & crate-trained. He is neutered, heartworm negative (& on preventative), & is current on his vaccinations.

If you'd like to meet Marble, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please contact Jeanne at bellestarr@lotsadogs.org, or 530-899-8022

CENTRAL CALIFORNIA DOGS

Fostered between San Francisco and San Luis Obispo

Name: CRICKET

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

Red & White
Age: ~9 months old.
Size: Medium

CRICKET is a sweet little girl who has had an unhappy life so far.  Things have changed drastically for her and we're hoping much better things are in her future.  She's the second dog we've taken in this month who had an owner that didn't pay attention to their dog.  The collar they put on Cricket when she was a pup, stayed on, although Cricket grew too big for it.  It cut into her neck and most likely would have killed her, but being the wise girl she is, she ran away from her owner to find some help for herself!  The animal control officers picked her up and the shelter vet took care of her wounds.  She is totally healed now although she will always have the scars around her neck to show what has happened.  Cricket still loves people which just shows how forgiving these dogs are.  She is crate trained and uses a doggy door.  She rides well in the car (in a crate), without making a sound.  Cricket most likely had to fight for all the food she got when she was a young pup, she is afraid another dog will take her food, so she needs to be fed separately to keep harmony in the home.  She is OK with other dogs but would probably do best as an only dog so she doesn't have to share anymore!

To visit with Cricket, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about her or to inquire about adopting, please email bcrncinc@aol.com

Name: DASH

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Basic Black
Age: 1 year old.
Size: Medium

DASH is another dog with a very sad story.  Dash originally came into rescue when he was 4 days old.  He came to us with his Border Collie mom and his 5 brothers and sisters.  He was one of the "Hat Litter" and we named him Bowler.  Obviously, the father of this litter was either Lab or Shepherd, and dash didn't get much of the Border Collie coloring and he weighs about 58 pounds.  Two weeks before Dash's first birthday, his family decided he was too big for their family.  Instead of honoring their contract with our rescue and returning Dash to us, they put him in their local animal shelter.  Since Dash had never been in a situation like this, he did like most sensitive Border Collies when they are locked up, he went into shelter shock.  Luckily, one of the shelter workers found out Dash had come from our rescue and she contacted us right away.  Dash was back in rescue by the next morning but the damage had already been done.  He was having a very hard time trusting people and it has taken several weeks for him to finally come around.  Now he's a wonderful dog and quite a clown!  He's very happy and is learning quickly.  His previous family didn't do much training with him so the only thing he know right now is sit and down.  He's going to need basic obedience classes to learn not to pull on leash and to come when called.  Dash is great with other dogs and is crate trained.  He rides well in the car and he has learned to catch treats.  He likes to play with balls and toys.  Dash was raised with children but since he is a big boy, he should only go to homes with children over the age of 12.

To visit with DASH, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about him or to inquire about adopting, please email bcrncinc@aol.com

Name: TINA

(Click on picture for more photos)

Female

White & Black
Age:  1 year old.
Size: Medium

Meet Tina (Turner), so named because it's apparent that she's a survivor of abuse.  She is a smallish young female received from the Madera shelter on August 16 as a former stray, with a significant healing wound all the way around her neck at the collar line (it was fresh when she was picked up by them in late July).  She has healed-up quickly and well, learned her new name in a flash and is settling in with the locals very well.  On her first trip to the dog park (photos), she inspected the perimeter, solicited the people, including a little girl, communed well with the other dogs and nimbly played chase with a Brittany.  She's generally unfamiliar with the tennis ball routine, and seemed suspicious and shy of the plastic ball flinger -- perhaps another hint as to her past tribulations.  She is reasonably confident and trusting, quickly house-training, settles down well indoors and will benefit from "basic training" on manners.  She's a very likable girl, bright and affectionate.  So, "Ike" -- if you're out there -- she's in a good place, and much better off for her escape.   She might not yet be Simply the Best (but she could be), and love will have everything to do with it.  I'll stop Rollin' on the Dog'rel now.

If you are interested in meeting Tina, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please email tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Name: SPENCER

(Click on picture for more photos)

Male

Black & White
Age: 4 1/2 years old
Size: Medium

So, this is Spencer -- recently rescued from the Madera shelter.  Spencer was admitted to the shelter as a stray.  He is approximately 4 1/2 years-old and most likely has some lab in him.  Whoever Spencer lived with in the past did not allow him to go inside the house; the poor guy's legs were shaking like mad when his foster parent brought him into the house for the first time.

Here is the lowdown on Spencer:

Pros:  1) he's very sweet!!! 2) he loves people; 3) he's gentle with children; 4) he is not hyper, but still playful; 5) he's enthusiastic; 6) he gets along well with other dogs and even acts like a puppy when playing with other dogs; 7) he is not obsessed with objects, herding or cats [he has been confronted by his foster parent's cats, but has not shown interest in them]; and 8) he is not "barky" or "whiney."

Cons:  1) though he is a non-aggressive dog, he has exhibited some strong food aggression with the other dogs in his foster home [this was resolved by simply separating him from the others at meal times, and also when giving chew treats such as rawhide]; 2) he will need lots of training walking on a leash, as this is probably the first time in his life that he walked on a leash; 3) he is crate-trained, but his foster parent is not certain that he is completely housebroken [however, there have been no accidents following the first day at his foster home]; and finally 4) he knows a few basic commands such as sit, come, down and off, but will need further consistent training.

Spencer just wants someone to love and to love him back.  He will bond quickly with his new family and won't leave his new family's side.  Yes he may appear slightly goofy and he does not have the classic border collie look, but man is he sweet!  Spencer deserves a wonderful home with loving people.  He will easily adore and worship anyone who gives him a chance by welcoming him into a good, solid and caring home.  This very affectionate dog clearly has not been given enough human affection in the past.  Spencer is extremely gentle when taking treats.  Sadly, Spencer shows fear when he hears people yelling, and his actions indicate that he has been physically abused in his prior life.
If you'd like to be considered for Spencer, you must have an approved application on file.

He is being fostered in San Francisco -- his foster mom can be reached at (415) 377-0370 or by e-mail to dpcragg@sbcglobal.net.

Name: RITA

(Click on picture for more photos)

Rita is now being sponsored "on behalf and in memory of little Ginger, my constant companion for 12 years".

Female

Tri-Color
Age: 6-7 years old.
Size: Medium

RITA is a 6-to-7-year-old tri-colored sprite. She is small, under 30 pounds, and she is at a good weight. She is crate-trained and hasn't had an accident in her foster home. Rita is a very active dog. She loves to run & to play. She has an impeccable recall. She is reactive to other dogs when she's in a kennel situation, but she has been utterly appropriate when loose with other dogs. If a dog gets in her face, she will respond, but also responds to being told to stop. She would do okay with another dog, if they have a chance to meet and especially if the other dog is a more submissive male. Rita will thrive in a home that provides stimulation and exercise, lots of fun things for a Border Collie to do.

To visit with lovely Rita, you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about her or to inquire about adopting, please email bcrncinc@aol.com

"Petey is now being sponsored "on behalf and in memory of little Ginger, my constant companion for 12 years".

Male

White & Black
Age:  1 year old.
Size: Medium

Meet Petey, a big (54 lbs), strapping yearling (est.) BCX we recently received from the Merced shelter, and named for the Our Gang pup with a similar eye patch.  Petey is friendly, responsive and well-socialized to dogs and people.  He knows some basic commands and will benefit from further training.  He is recently neutered, and crate-trained -- house-training is progressing well.  I would not recommend him for families with small children because of his size and strength, but he's a terrific find for an active household with adolescents on-up.  No word on cats.

Petey is fostered in Danville, in the SF East Bay.

Name: MOCHA

(Click on picture for more photos)

Mocha is being sponsored by Jack, another wonderful Border Collie who was rescued by Fay and Wayne.

Female

Black & White
Age:  1 year old.
Size: Medium

Meet Mocha, a lovely 45-lb. yearling spayed female sprung from Martinez shelter on July14.  She has a gorgeous, thick bright-white/mahogany coat.  We believe she's deaf and so will benefit from an experienced handler.  She has a few shelter-born habits like twirling-in-place that we think will dissipate as she realizes that running from hither to yon is more fun.   She did well at the dog park today, showing good ball dog instincts; she did bark at a few folks at first, but became more comfortable as time went on.  I do not recommend her for a home with pre-adolescent children, as they were of some herding interest to her.  She has been affectionate with me, with a willful streak that may be based on mistrust -- stay tuned as we learn more about this little girl!  She is fostered in Danville, in the SF East Bay.

If you are interested in meeting Mocha, you must have an approved application on file.  For more information, please email tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Name: JESSIE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Jessie is now being sponsored “For the Love of Cody, Tammy and Harley”

Female

Black & White
Age: ~ 6 months old
Size: Medium

"Jessie is a sweet, active six month-old Border Collie/Lab mix.  She loves to play and romp with her four Border Collie girl friends and adores our two male guys.   Jessie plays hard and sleeps just as hard.

Coming from a background of being found in an abandoned house with her 10 starving siblings Jessie now thrives.  Though she eats like a horse she has a thin body.  Her shinny black coat shows a tinge of brown in the sunlight and is short and smooth as silk.

Jessie gets along with our in-house pack of six very active working Border Collies and enjoys going on outings with them running and exploring. She would do well in a home with other dogs.  She has had no experience with cats.

Jessie is spayed; current with her shots and is house trained.  She is living in her foster home in Hayward.

If you'd like to visit with JESSIE you must have an approved application on file.  To learn more about her, please contact (henrylosee@mac.com) and include "Jessie" in the subject line of your email to bypass our spam filters.

Name: MOUSE

(Click on picture for more photos)

Check out Mouse's video

Mouse is now being sponsored "In loving memory of "Snowdonia".

Male

Black & White
Age: 8 months old
Size: Medium

Meet Mouse, a tiny 8-month-old, recently-neutered male pup whose is a bad news/great news story.  He came into Martinez shelter as a stray, limited to gamely limping on his front legs and scraped-up all over from having been hit by a vehicle (bad news).  The resident vet and foster coordinator worked to determine the scope of his several injuries, including fractures to both femurs at the hip joint.  They then contacted us to offer that, if we could take him into our pack, the vet would perform the needed bilateral FHO surgery that promises to restore his mobility.  Great news, tempered only by the fact that we hoped they would find him a regular tail to attach while they were busy with his other hindquarters requirements.   We took him in a few days post-surgery.  His activity level has been substantially limited in the early stages of his recovery, but he does put weight on both rear legs and he is quickly regaining strength.

He's a sweet-natured little guy, needy at present, but quite calm when hanging out with the pack, settling into the local routines and even playing gently with Tuxedo.  We are working on his weight -- he came in at a very scrawny 21 lbs., and will probably top-out under thirty.  He hated his e-collar, which came off today.  He is bright, alert even on post-operative drugs, friendly and well-socialized to the other local canines.  He is fostered in Danville.  We will update his recovery from time-to-time, or his foster family may be contacted at tfcmail@gmail.com, or Tom at 415.307.1600 (cell).

Folks who read these descriptions regularly may be aware of my occasional exasperation with shelter operations, particularly as regards temperament testing.  That said, I want to express our appreciation to the Martinez Staff for going well-beyond the call-of-normal duty to give this good little boy a second chance at life.  Thanks -- we are very pleased to take it from here!

UPDATE:  Mouse has continued his remarkable recovery from bilateral hip surgery, and will be an energetic, fully-functioning playmate for some lucky family.  He has added muscle and strength in his hindquarters, walking and running normally.  He only reverts to the modified bunny-hop at top speed, but that may evolve, as well.  He is a lean, healthy 25-pounder with very good human and dog sociability and house-training manners.  Mouse is appropriate with larger dogs, standing his ground in measured ways.  He travels and settles down in the house well, on his favorite dog bed.  He will benefit from some leash-walking work.  We will try to get video posted at youtube to show Mouse in action.

He is fostered in Danville, in the SF East Bay.

Name: BILLY

(Click on picture for more photos)

"Billy is being sponsored in loving memory of Irenne and the many wonderful days we spent at the beach."

Male

Black & White
Age: ~1 1/2 years old
Size: Medium

Meet Billy, a yearling neutered male BC/cattle dog cross with interesting wavy fur.  Billy's tongue and tail are too long, and his ears sometimes stand straight up, all of which lends him a comic air.  He really does want to please, and is endearingly affectionate.  He is crate and house-trained and is relatively low energy around home, assuming he's had his daily workout at the dogpark.  He has a strong herding drive, but is not particularly interested in ball-chasing -- he'd rather chase the dog who's after the ball.

Billy is somewhat immature in that he still squats to pee, despite several older male role models around here.  He also tends to want to playfully (his word) nip at dogs he's chasing, which tends to annoy them.  He accepts regular correction by them, as he also shows that legendary cattle dog persistence.  In a prior foster setting with another Rescue, Billy also picked-on an ancient female incumbent -- so I would recommend that if he lives in a multi-dog household, the other dog(s) be willing to put him in his place.

I am trying to spend daily training time with Billy, as I have a hunch that his dawning maturity, together with that eagerness to please, will pay real dividends.  So, he's a little headstrong now as befits his age and breeding, but he'll likely make a great and loyal companion and running buddy.

If you are interested in meeting Billy, you must have an approved application on file.
